Climatology researcher at the Center for Climate and Atmospheric Research at BRIN, Erma Yulihastin, shared an update on Ilsa’s cyclone. He added that on this day also Cyclone Ilsa already has a hurricane eye which indicates her form is perfect as a storm with full strength and super. “With wind speeds of 205 kilometers per hour and gusts of wind reaching 285 kilometers per hour,” he said.

The worst impact of course leads to Australia. The local government, said Erma, has issued the latest warning that a severe storm will approach the Port Hedland and Wallal Down areas starting tonight until Friday morning tomorrow. They also warned of the worst impact that could occur when the incoming storm extends to mainland northern Australia.

Highly damaging high winds of up to 155 kph will head towards the Port Hedland and Wallal Down areas. Meanwhile, in other areas, wind gusts will reach 90 kilometers per hour accompanied by extreme rain (150 – 300 mm) along the path of its movement.

“Ilsa is the strongest type of tropical cyclone with the worst impact that can occur on the northwestern and northern coasts of Australia over the past decade,” said the doctor in climatology.

Then how the impact in Indonesia? According to Erma, the impact on the weather will be significant. He stated that the super Ilsa would create the first strong vortex and occur throughout the region in southern Indonesia from Kupang to Lampung.

However, convection accumulation will be concentrated in the central and eastern parts, namely in East Java, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa and Kupang. “It is this area that will experience persistent rain which can suddenly turn into extreme rain from today to the next two-three days.”

In a previous statement, Erma said that it was especially East Java that had to be vigilant. In this area it has rained in several areas since Wednesday through Thursday morning.

Erma also compared Ilsa with the previous tropical cyclone in the same area, namely Herman. According to him, Ilsan has a slow and long process from the beginning of the vortex to the peak of its power, which is 17 days. Herman only needed 7 days.

“Seeing the characteristics of this sluggish storm, it is also possible that Ilsa’s decay will not occur quickly, therefore it is necessary to constantly monitor its impact on the weather in Indonesian territory from time to time,” he said.
