Rib Injury, Iga Swiatek Withdraws from Miami Open

Reportase.one – World number one Iga Swiatek withdrew from the Miami Open tournament on Wednesday local time due to a rib injury.

The Pole, who is the defending champion in Miami, is set to meet American Claire Liu. She lost in the semifinals to Indian Wells to Elena Rybakina, who would eventually become champion.

Regarding his injury, Swiatek said he injured his ribs with a strong cough after contracting an infection.

“You know that in and after Doha I was battling a severe infection,” Swiatek said, as broadcast by AFP on Thursday.

“I was cleared to play, but a bad cough caused a rib injury. We are trying to deal with it and keep playing as long as it is safe for me. We analyzed the data of the last days, and the doctors prepared my diagnosis.”

“Unfortunately, I still have a lot of discomfort and pain and I can’t compete.”

Swiatek said the injury was not serious enough to keep him out for long, although he did not specify a timeline for his return.

With a strong advantage over second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, Swiatek’s number one status will not be directly affected by his absence in Miami.

“Of course I will drop points for this tournament but that doesn’t change anything in terms of my approach and mentality,” said Swiatek.
