Reportase.one, Jakarta – Pharmaceutical company Moderna believes they will be able to produce vaccines against cancer as well as cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases by as early as 2030.
Moderna’s chief medical officer Paul Burton told The Guardian the company will likely be able to offer vaccines for “all kinds of disease areas” in less than five years.
Burton said that studies on this vaccine show “tremendous promise”. Researchers say this was made possible due to the success of the Covid-19 shot produced in such a short time. Now 15 years of progress have “unlocked” in 12 to 18 months, experts say.
Burton told The Guardian that the company is developing a cancer vaccine aimed at different types of tumors.
“We will have the vaccine, and it will be very effective, and it will save hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of lives. I think we will be able to offer personalized cancer vaccines against various types of tumors to people around the world,” said Burton, as quoted by Wionews, Monday, April 10, 2023.
Burton said that one shot would be enough for some respiratory infections and help those who are vulnerable to be protected against Covid-19, flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
However, mRNA therapy must be used for rare diseases because there is no cure for these diseases. The way mRNA therapy works is by teaching cells how to make proteins that trigger the body’s immune response to disease.
An mRNA-based cancer vaccine will work by alerting the immune system to cancer that is already growing in the body. The system can then attack and destroy them, without harming healthy cells.
He also expressed hope that “10 years from now, we will be approaching a world where you can actually identify the genetic causes of disease”.
However, scientists warn the progress made in the last three years will be wasted if high levels of investment are not maintained.
