Reportase.one, Jakarta – Technical acting head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Data Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said the earthquake that rocked the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, was felt strong with shaking for about 30 seconds.

Muhari directly felt the strength of the earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 because he was at the Mercure Hotel, Padang City. The hotel is located about 200 meters from the beach and is one of the tsunami evacuation sites.

“The scale of the earthquake was felt from the 5th floor of the Mercure Hotel, Padang City, at IV-V MMI, namely walls rattled, lamps swayed and items on tables fell,” said Abdul Muhari, Tuesday, April 25, 2023.

According to him, from visual observations, people generally leave their homes in response to the earthquake. “I panicked, but it’s under control. Currently some are evacuating away from the sea,” he said.

Muhari said that until 03.56 WIB there were no abnormal conditions in the sea water.

Previously the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had issued a tsunami early warning for an earthquake that occurred on Tuesday, April 25 2023, at 03.00 WIB.

Based on temporary BMKG data, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 rocked the Mentawai-Siberut region, West Sumatra. “A tsunami was observed of 11 cm,” said the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, via text message.
