Reportase.one, Jakarta – Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp, said the match against Manchester City in the Premier League continued on Saturday night was a very important match, even though the Reds did not participate in the race for the championship this season.
Liverpool and City have dominated the race for the English Premier League title in recent seasons, and matches between the two clubs are considered to be decisive.
This season, Arsenal and Manchester City are fighting for the English Premier League title. Arsenal topped the standings with 69 points and followed by City with 61 points.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are in sixth place and are 19 points behind Manchester City who occupy second place. However, Klopp said this match was very important to prove the quality of the Liverpool squad.
“It’s a super important game. It’s one thing that’s no different from any other year,” Klopp said ahead of Saturday’s game.
“You have to play your best game against City. You have to defend at the highest level, but also play good football,” said the German coach.
Liverpool will try to secure their first away win against City since 2015. The Reds will benefit from the possible absence of City striker Erling Haaland due to a groin injury while on international duty for Norway.
However, Klopp said that Haaland’s absence would not change his team’s preparations for City. He said that Pep Guardiola’s team was still dangerous, even though they played without a pure striker.
“Erling is a sharp striker, but they (City) can become champions without a pure striker.”
Klopp says his team are now focused on finishing in the top four of the Premier League after being knocked out of the Champions League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
“Now it is clear, now we are aiming for the top four. We are not in a good position, but it is still achievable. We have to win a lot of games.”
