Japan, US reaffirm bilateral cooperation against North Korea

Karuizawa, Japan (Reportase One) – Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken are expected to reaffirm bilateral cooperation to deal with North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile launches.

The confirmation will likely be reflected in the two foreign ministers’ talks on Monday, according to a Japanese government official.

The Hayashi-Blinken meeting, held on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) countries’ meeting of foreign ministers in the city of Karuizawa, central Japan, will also discuss the regional situation regarding China and the deterrence capabilities pursued by the Japan-US alliance.

“We hope the ministers will confirm the alignment between Japan and the US on various issues,” the official said.

The security situation in the Indo-Pacific region remains tense, while China continues its military build-up and pushes forward with its territorial claims in the East and South China Seas, and North Korea continues to conduct missile tests.

North Korea on Thursday launched a ballistic missile toward the Sea of Japan, which state media called a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile propelled by a three-stage rocket system.

Japan, the US and South Korea have condemned Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile development programmes. The three countries agreed to step up efforts to realize real-time information sharing on North Korean missiles.

Meanwhile, the US has affirmed its “firm commitment” to defend its two closest Asian allies with full deployment of its defense capabilities.

The countries’ trilateral cooperation has strengthened since South Korea’s proposal to settle a dispute with Japan over wartime workers’ compensation.
