Indonesia Sends 599 Athletes from 31 Sports to the 2023 SEA Games Cambodia

Reportase.one, Jakarta – Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Dito Ariotedjo officially announced the number of Indonesian contingents that will compete in the 2023 SEA Games Cambodia. Indonesia will send as many as 599 athletes from 31 sports to the event multievent biennial in Southeast Asia.

The number of athletes in the Indonesian contingent has increased by around 100 athletes from those sent to the 2021 Vietnam SEA Games. Dito revealed the reason because in this event there were more team sports being contested.

“For the SEA Games Cambodia 2023, it is different from the SEA Games in Hanoi because there are more individual sports contested, while the individual sports that were participated in in Hanoi which won 39 gold medals were not competed in Cambodia,” said Dito as quoted from the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ official statement, Monday, April 17, 2023.

“I am optimistic and confident, after sitting with the NOC President, the KONI Secretary General and the Review Team that Indonesia’s ranking will at least last (rank 3) at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games,” the young Golkar Party politician added.

There are a number of sports that previously did not exist, but are now being contested at the 2023 Cambodia SEA Games, such as hockey (38 athletes), cricket (30 athletes) and Waterpolo (26 athletes). “So this is the reason for the increase in the number of our athlete contingent to almost 100 athletes.”

The decision to add athletes has gone through a joint discussion process with the Indonesian Olympic Committee (NOC), the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) from the Indonesian Review Team at the 2023 SEA Games. Even though Indonesia’s chances of winning 39 gold medals had to be lost because there were sports that were not played, Dito assessed there are still opportunities from other sports to donate medals.

“It’s been two weeks since I sat as Menpora. Today we have finalized the review and agreement between Kemenpora, NOC, KONI based on the review results,” said Dito.

“This decision is a joint decision through a long journey of at least one year. God willing, this is the best for Indonesia and Merah Putih. So, indeed with the swelling of the contingent it is a strategy and a challenge that must be passed,” he said.

SEA Games 2023 itself will start taking place on 5-17 May 2023 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In total there are 608 match numbers from 37 sports that are included.
