BNPT conveys that law enforcers in Papua need a humanist approach

“We want this law on terrorism not only to think about prosecution, not with continuous weapons, but soft approaches because what changes (is) the way of thinking. Law enforcement and prevention must be balanced.

Jakarta (Reportase One) – Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) Komjen Pol. Boy Rafli Amar conveyed that what needs to be underlined in resolving violence in Papua are humanist approaches by law enforcement officials.

“We want this law on terrorism not only to think about prosecution, not with continuous weapons, but soft approaches because what changes (is) the way of thinking. Law enforcement and prevention must be carried out in a balanced way,” Boy Rafli said at a coordination meeting on the readiness of law enforcement officials in Jayapura, Papua, Tuesday.

In a statement received in Jakarta, Boy emphasized that law enforcement and prevention must be carried out in a balanced and non-discriminatory manner.

Boy added, in implementing the Anti-Terrorism Law Number 5 of 2018, prevention is carried out through national preparedness, counter-radicalization and deradicalization.

The BNPT RI is carrying out these prevention efforts using a soft approach with the central and regional governments, the community, business actors, academics, and the media.

National preparedness and counter-radicalization in Papua are carried out through the establishment of the Coordinating Forum for the Prevention of Terrorism, Ambassadors of Peace, and the Forum for Conscience of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia or Warung NKRI.

Boy Rafli also hopes that, in the future, deradicalization can be carried out for entities that commit violence in Papua.

“We hope that the deradicalization program can be carried out in Papua,” he added.

The implementation of coordination with law enforcement officials in Papua is expected to optimize the relationship between central and regional level officials in strengthening criminal justice system contributing to solving problems in conflict-prone areas.

Previously, the BNPT RI had also inaugurated the 24th Indonesian Republic Warung at The Hele’yo Sentani Papua Coffee Barn, Papua (20/3).

This shop will hold national dialogues to recall the noble values that are the foundation of the Indonesian nation, namely Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution. The hope is that Warung NKRI can encourage unity and integrity in the land of Papua.
