Jakarta, Reportase – A number of well-known AI researchers and Elon Musk signed an open letter asking AI laboratories around the world to stop developing large-scale AI systems.
This petition was born because of concerns over the big risks to society and humanity that they claim will be created by artificial intelligence technology.
The letter was published by the non-profit organization Future of Life Institute. They note that there is currently an out-of-control race between AI labs to develop and implement machine learning systems that no one, not even their creators, can understand, predict, or control.
“We call on all AI laboratories to immediately stop training AI systems stronger than GPT-4 for at least 6 months,” the petition reads.
“Therefore, we urge all AI laboratories to immediately temporarily suspend at least 6 months of training of AI systems stronger than GPT-4.”
“This pause must be public and verifiable, and include all key actors. If such a pause cannot be imposed quickly, the government must step in and institute a moratorium.”
The petition has been signed by many people, including author Yuval Noah Harari, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, politician Andrew Yang, and a number of well-known AI researchers and CEOs, including Stuart Russell, Yoshua Bengio, Gary Marcus, and Emad Mostaque.
The letter is unlikely to have any bearing on the natural climate of AI research that has already sent tech companies like Google and Microsoft rushing to deploy new products. The adoption of such AI products often overrides previously acknowledged safety and ethical concerns.
As noted in the letter, even OpenAI itself has expressed the potential need for independent reviews of future AI systems to ensure they meet safety standards.
“AI labs and independent experts should use this break to jointly develop and implement a common set of safety protocols for advanced AI design and development that are rigorously audited and supervised by independent outside experts,” they wrote.
“This protocol must ensure that the systems that follow it are secure.”
