10 Countries Block TikTok, Closer to Indonesia

Jakarta, Reportase – The list of countries where the use of Tiktok is banned is getting longer. Most recently Australia announced the same policy.

Tiktok is considered a risk to the country’s national security. Even the application is said to have a relationship with the Chinese government and can provide user access to them.

The blocking storm has occurred since December last year. But so far, the blocking has been limited to devices used by government employees of these countries.

The following is a list of countries that have banned Tiktok, summarized from various sources, Wednesday (5/4/2023):

1. Taiwan

Taiwan announced a ban on the use of applications by the government and the public on December 8, 2022. They are also prohibited from installing applications on their official devices.

2. United States of America (USA)

On December 27, 2022, the US also did the same. By email, the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer banned DPR members and their staff from using Tiktok on government devices.

Not long ago, the US congress also summoned Tiktok CEO Shou Zi Chew. The opportunity also discussed the possibility of the Chinese Communist Party accessing the platform’s user data, which Chew denied.

3. European Union

The European Commission also banned its government apparatus from being used for Tiktok on February 23, 2023. There are 32 thousand employees including 27 European Union member countries who are affected by this policy.

4. Canada

Still in the same month, it was Canada’s turn to carry out a similar order. The ban is still limited to the government, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau explained that the public may reflect on the ban on data security itself and provide a choice.

5. Latvian

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkevics, announced that he had removed Tiktok from his cellphone as of early March. The ministry he leads is also prohibited from using the application.

6. Denmark

The Danish cybersecurity center has determined Tiktok is at risk of espionage. The local government finally banned employee devices from using the application. On March 10, public broadcaster DR deleted Tiktok from his phone.

7. Belgium

Prime Minister Alexander de Croo said he banned Tiktok on government devices because of a warning about the app from the country’s security service and cybersecurity centre. He also touched on the app’s relationship with China.

8. England

Tiktok was banned from use on UK government devices in mid-March. Cabinet office minister Oliver Dowden explained the reason for the ban as a proportionate, risk-based measure.

9. New Zealand

New Zealand lawmakers were also banned from using Tiktok on 17 March 2023. They reasoned that they could not accept the risks posed by Tiktok.

Australia is the latest country to ban the use of Tiktok on government devices. China is also the reason for the ban, because there is a fear of user data being taken for the country’s political interests and undermining Western interests.
